Simmer Ootin and Other Scots Writings – Douglas Kynoch
Simmer Ootin and other Scots writings features a variety of poetry and prose, both comic and serious, largely written in a form of North-east rural Scots, though the author’s Aberdeen city tongue is also represented.
The title piece, Simmer Ootin, Douglas Kynoch’s most ambitious work to date, sensitively compares today’s countryside in the Parish of Premnay with that of the 1940s, while The Pinter humorously sends up the art-world. Other verses recall childhood, including a picture of school life conveyed in portraits of some kenspeckle schoolmasters. There’s a tribute to the late Aberdeen poet Alec Scott, reflections on church life and a study of the devastating nature of dementia. As well as Scots renderings of psalms and original carols, there are also translations of work by French authors and of well-known poems by Robert Frost and Edward Thomas.
Douglas Kynoch is the author of the Scottish best-seller Teach Yourself Doric and of the popular sequel, Doric for Swots.
