Description

From the back streets of Aberdeen to the battlefield in World War 2, Jimmy Johnson’s journey was one of courage and resilience. Serving with the Gordon Highlanders and the Commando regiment, he played a crucial role in Operation Chariot, the daring raid on St. Nazaire in occupied France. Despite being wounded three times, Jimmy’s unwavering bravery led to the successful demolition of the largest dry dock in the world, earning him the prestigious Military Medal.

Enduring over two years as a Prisoner of War, Jimmy’s spirit remained unbroken even during the harrowing death march, until his liberation by the allies just before the war’s end.

His story is a testament to the indomitable human spirit, filled with adventure, romance, and gripping action that will captivate readers.

“I had heard a few stories about my uncle Jimmy from my mother many years ago. Just a few passing comments about him being awarded the Military Medal for a raid against the Germans and him spending the rest of the war as a prisoner of war. Many years later I started reading a book, ‘Storming St. Nazaire’ by James Dorrian about Operation Chariot and the raid on St. Nazaire and I was hooked. I then read every book, magazine and internet article I could find on the subject and eventually came up with the idea of telling Jimmy Johnson’s story from his own personal point of view. I hope that this will give future generations some idea of what men like Jimmy and his fellow servicemen had to endure to win the freedom that so many of us take for granted today.” – Roy Burnett
